Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology collects cells from a selected lump or lesion using a fine needle. Sampling may be considered for selected liver, gall bladder, breast, lung, thyroid, lymph-node and other lesions after clinical and imaging review. FNAC is not appropriate for every lesion.

Before diagnostic sampling
Fine-needle aspiration cytology uses a thin needle to collect cellular material from a selected swelling or lesion. It differs from biopsy, which generally collects a tissue core for histopathology.
Whether FNAC is appropriate depends on the target, previous imaging and the clinical question. Some lesions may require ultrasound guidance or a different sampling method.
Bring the prescription and relevant ultrasound, CT, MRI or previous pathology reports. These help the procedure team confirm the target and requested analysis.
Sample adequacy and diagnostic yield depend on the lesion and material obtained. The treating clinician may recommend repeat sampling, biopsy or another test depending on the cytology result and clinical context.
Image Guidance
Imaging supports localisation and planning, but it does not eliminate procedure-related risks or guarantee a diagnostic or treatment outcome.
