Ultrasound-Guided Sampling
USG-guided FNAC uses real-time ultrasound to identify a selected lesion and guide fine-needle cell sampling. Guidance can improve localisation but cannot guarantee a diagnostic outcome.
Understanding the Procedure
Ultrasound helps show the target and surrounding structures during selected FNAC procedures.
The procedure is recommended only when the lesion and clinical question are appropriate for this method.
Before diagnostic sampling
USG-Guided FNAC is considered after the referral, symptoms and relevant imaging have been reviewed. The procedure team needs to confirm that the proposed approach addresses the treating clinician’s question and is appropriate for the target anatomy.
Previous ultrasound, CT, MRI, angiography or laboratory reports may change planning. Bring the most recent records and a current medicine list so preparation can be individualised.
Fasting, blood tests, medicine instructions, local anaesthesia, sedation and observation vary by procedure. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the treating or procedure team provides specific advice.
Recovery and follow-up depend on the treated area and clinical condition. The procedure report should be reviewed with the treating team together with symptoms, laboratory findings and subsequent imaging where advised.
Image Guidance
Imaging supports localisation and planning, but it does not eliminate procedure-related risks or guarantee a diagnostic or treatment outcome.
