Image-Guided Drainage
Percutaneous Catheter Drainage uses image guidance to place a catheter into a selected fluid collection for drainage when clinically advised. It does not guarantee that surgery or other treatment will be avoided.
Understanding the Procedure
PCD may be considered for selected abscesses or fluid collections after clinical and imaging review.
The catheter plan, observation and follow-up depend on the collection and patient’s condition.
Before diagnostic sampling
PCD Procedure is considered after the referral, symptoms and relevant imaging have been reviewed. The procedure team needs to confirm that the proposed approach addresses the treating clinician’s question and is appropriate for the target anatomy.
Previous ultrasound, CT, MRI, angiography or laboratory reports may change planning. Bring the most recent records and a current medicine list so preparation can be individualised.
Fasting, blood tests, medicine instructions, local anaesthesia, sedation and observation vary by procedure. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the treating or procedure team provides specific advice.
Recovery and follow-up depend on the treated area and clinical condition. The procedure report should be reviewed with the treating team together with symptoms, laboratory findings and subsequent imaging where advised.

Imaging supports localisation and planning, but it does not eliminate procedure-related risks or guarantee a diagnostic or treatment outcome.
